ReelLife Benefits HSA funds must be spent by year-end
Under Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) rules, any money moved to your HSA in 2010 must be spent in 2011 or it will be forfeited, no exceptions.

Even if you don't have family coverage under your health and dental benefits, you can use your HSA to cover eligible expenses for you and your family.

Under the HSA "eligible dependants" are defined as a family member who lives in Canada and, for tax purposes, is claimed by you as a dependant.

With less than a month left to use this money, this might be a good opportunity to:
~ ease the holiday stress with a trip to a registered massage therapist,
~ treat yourself to those prescription sun glasses you've been talking about, and/or
~ pamper your feet with some much-needed orthotics.

To find out if you have funds left in your HSA, visit GroupNet for Plan Members at www.greatwestlife.com. Or call a representative at 1-800-957-9777, weekdays between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm (EST).

Government Measure Allows for 100% Computer Write-off
Budget 2009 proposes a temporary 100-per-cent CCA (capital cost allowance) rate for computer hardware and systems software acquired after January 27, 2009 and before February 1, 2011. In addition, the rule that restricts CCA deductions to one-half of the CCA write-off otherwise available in the first year will not apply to these computers. This temporary measure will allow taxpayers to fully expense their investment in computers in one year. The measure will provide stimulus by assisting businesses to increase or accelerate investment in computers. It will also contribute to boosting Canada's productivity through the faster adoption of newer technology. Businesses in all sectors of the economy, including the service sector, will benefit from this incentive. It is estimated that this measure will cost $340 million in 2009-10 and $355 million in 2010-11. For more information, click here.

TIME SENSITIVE - CAVCO Personnel Number
The Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office (CAVCO) has introduced a new procedure for producers and key creative personnel to demonstrate Canadian citizenship or permanent residency for the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit (CPTC) program. All Canadian producers and personnel eligible for Canadian content points will need to apply for a CAVCO Personnel Number that will be submitted with applications to the CPTC. Canadian citizens will only need to send in their proof of citizenship to CAVCO once, and permanent residents will need to resubmit their documentation only when their permanent resident card expires.

Producers and key creative personnel can currently apply for and use a CAVCO Personnel Number. As of December 31, 2010 it will be mandatory for all such personnel to provide this number for a CPTC application. This new procedure addresses the industry's concerns regarding the security of personal information, as all documentation will now be sent directly to CAVCO. All information retained by CAVCO is protected and confidential. The process will also be faster and more convenient.

Details about this policy are outlined in Public Notice CAVCO 2010-01. Apply for your CAVCO Personnel Number online at the CAVCO website or download the form here. If you wish to send in the required documentation by mail, click here. Please contact CAVCO with any questions at 819-934-9830, (toll-free) 1-888-433-2200 or email bcpac-cavco@pch.gc.ca. Forms can be mailed to: Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office, 9th Floor, 25 Eddy Street, Gatineau, Quebec, K1A 0M5.
